Someone Is Watching You

In this video, we are reminded that we are constantly under the eye of an omnipotent God. He sees everything we do. He knows the company we keep. He knows all our thoughts and utterances.

Someone is Watching You

Our family home is located in a semi-rural area near West Point Lake in West Central Georgia. We live in a neighborhood of very busy but friendly people. It is a community in which parents feel they can allow their children freedom to explore their surroundings without fear.

However, several weeks ago a couple of young juveniles discovered our trusting neighborhood and they participated in a string of thefts that put this community on edge. Outdoor spotlights and cameras were installed all up and down our streets and communication on social media increased significantly.

My wife and I installed surveillance cameras to protect the entrances of our home, both inside and out.

Fortunately, the perpetrators were identified and prosecuted and the thievery came to a full stop.

Now during my pre-dawn prayer walks with my dog, Scout, I notice that we can light up the entire neighborhood as our movement triggers outdoor spotlights to illuminate yards and driveways. Suddenly, a solitaire walk has been pervaded by lightened observations and recordings.

We are all being perpetually recorded by thousands of cameras. We are recorded as we travel along our streets and highways. We are recorded as we enter and leave places of business and as we sit with family to eat in a restaurant. We are recorded as we perform our duties in the workplace. In this part of the country, you can be sure that a hunter’s camera positioned high in a tree will record your hike through the woods.

After installing cameras focused on the entrances of our home, my wife discovered that our dog, Scout, willingly and deceitfully participated in a behavior he knows good and well is strictly prohibited. My wife caught him sitting in her comfortable, plush chair. That is something he would never do if we were at home with him. He thought he could get away with it because he was alone in the house. He had no idea that eyes were upon him.

GUILTY!

I wonder if people who feel uncomfortable knowing their lives are being recorded everywhere, all the time, feel a similar discomfort knowing that every movement in every moment of their lives is being recorded by the eye of an omnipresent God.

“You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.” (Psalm 139)

I have heard those who have brushed closely with death say that in that moment their lives flashed before them in an instant. Are our lives being recorded? On that day when we all stand before “Him who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23) will we review in the presence of the Almighty every place we have sat, every thought we ever had and every word we have ever spoken?

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” (Psalm 139)

The Spirit of the Eternal God abides within us and all about us. There are no secret closets to enter. He is there. He is there looking at the same screens we are looking at. He is the third party on every phone call and he hears our every word. “No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.” (Hebrews 4:13)

Do you ever just feel like someone is watching you? He is. Always.
